Reckon True Stories, Episode 5: Alexander Chee

Hi friends,

Today we’re excited to share another new episode of Reckon True Stories: Deesha Philyaw and Kiese Laymon chat with writer Alexander Chee, author of Edinburgh, The Queen of the Night, and How to Write an Autobiographical Novel.

Listen in your favorite podcast app, and be sure to follow the show so you don’t miss an episode:

As always, you can get the full show notes and reading list over at Reckon.

Chee: “The feeling of being good or not being good is always kind of betting against ourselves, thinking of the last best thing we did and thinking, Can I do that again? Or not even do that, but can I beat that in some way?

“Maybe I’m projecting, maybe not everybody is like that. But this idea of competing against myself is something that I do understand as part of my writing process.

“Easily one of the hardest things about the writing life is the asymmetry between effort and reward. Where you take so much time and you write something and then people are like, ‘Yeah, that’s pretty good.’ And then you write something very quickly, and you send it out there, and it goes viral, and people are writing to you, Oh my god, I love this, and you’re like, ‘Oh, right.’”

Thanks for your continued support!

We’ve been seeing all of your thoughtful reviews on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and we are so happy you’re enjoying the show so far. Can’t wait for more.
